Today, B&W release their 603, 606 and 607 loudspeaker range to replace the 680 series, and are predicted to have mastery over the value speaker bracket once more.
From their beginnings in the mid 1960’s and the inclusion of Aramid Fibre drive units in the 70’s, to the Nautilus and 800 Diamond series of recent years, B&W has always been a hallmark of quality production.
Bowers & Wilkins existing 600 series has been one of the best performing speaker ranges under £1000 for decades. B&W themselves, better known for making flagship models found in the likes of Abbey Road Studios, are a benchmark of quality for loudspeakers across the lower price point, as they consistently deliver some of the best sound for the value. The top end technology from that of the Diamond range gets filtered down and suited to fit all their products for a fraction of the price tag.
I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of these speakers near York where I had an initial listen and run through of the technology inside. The existing range has been simplified from four models to three, but the colour options of black and white remain the same. The 607’s are set to replace the 686 S2’s, the 606’s are to replace the 685 S2’s, and the 603’s will take the place of the 683 S2’s. Got that? Let’s get the similarities out of the way - these speakers look like the outgoing 686 S2, 685 S2 and 683 S2, but by a noticeable margin they sound better. B&W have (somehow) managed to get their much more expensive 700 series drive unit technology into these new models.
Also joining the new range are three subwoofers of exceptional quality (ASW610XP, ASW610 and ASW608) and a flashy new HTM6 centre channel.
Here's what B&W themselves had to say;
" “The 600 Series is the perfect entry point into the Bowers & Wilkins high-fidelity audio experience,” said Richard Campbell, Chief Revenue Officer at Bowers & Wilkins. “The new 600 Series embodies the original ethos of John Bowers’ mission to deliver best sound quality and to set new standards for audio performance.”
This breakthrough quality and value is achieved by integrating higher-end technologies first used in the Bowers & Wilkins’ flagship 800 Series Diamond range. The new 600 Series is the most affordable range to incorporate the remarkable Continuum Cone midrange driver, developed and exclusively manufactured by Bowers & Wilkins to improve upon the transparency and accuracy of the iconic Kevlar cone. Available in every model in the new 600 Series range, the Continuum Cone enables astonishing levels of insight and realism. "
The B&W 603, 606 and 607 are set to arrive in store early September, with all models available for demonstration by request. If you are interested in trading up to these exciting new speakers please get in touch, you can find more information here.
