Naim’s New Network Streamers Start to Arrive

ND 555 In Store Now

July Update

The first of our streamers has finally arrived - the Naim ND 555 is now available for demonstration at Hi-Fi Corner.

We have just finished unboxing this unit, and are incredibly excited to test it out on our equipment and produce a full review.

Mid-May Update

First viewing of the new Naim streamers at Munich 2018. Naim were playing the ND 555 in their stereo demo room through a pair of Focal loudspeakers, and first impressions were good, even if I’m not a big fan of Focal. The ND 555 has stiff competition from DCS (which we will test against the ND 555 once it arrives) Linn, T&A and Melco for top dog, but certainly by the looks of the internals there is a lot of streamer here. You can see Naim’s signature brass plate under the circuit board of the ND 555 as well as some trickle down technology from the Statement series including 13 discrete regulators to supply ultra-clean voltage to the delicate audio stage. Also featured are brass SpringBoard platforms, to decouple the PCBs from any vibration above 10Hz.

Our demo unit is on order, so we are looking forward to having a more extended listen once it arrives.

May 2018 Update

Naim are now ready to start processing orders for the ND555, NDX 2 and ND5 XS 2. This means that not only will they start making models for customer orders, they will also send out demonstration units within the first batch of shipments. We are expecting the ND555, NDX 2 and ND5 XS 2 streamers to be available in June, July and August respectively.

The prices for these models has also been confirmed officially by Naim and are as follows;

  • ND555 - £12,999 (ex power supply)
  • NDX 2 - £4,999
  • ND5XS 2 - £2,299

The ND555 will use the 555 PSU to run; the anodised varient is the correct match for this unit.

We hope to have our first model ready and available for demonstration in-store by mid June for the ND 555; if you would like to be informed when this is to hand, please contact us here.

April 2018 Update

As expected, with the launch of the new streamer range, the older Naim network streamer range will be phased out and shortly discontinued. We have a limited number of ex-display Naim units for sale at both our Edinburgh and Falkirk stores, please contact us for more information. Additionally, we have listed our ex-demonstration NDX and ND5 XS on our web shop.

Any more information released will be posted here. Please get in touch if you have any questions about the new Naim series or would be interested in trading in your old kit.

Late March 2018 Update

Officially launched just before the Bristol Sound & Vision Hi-Fi Show, Naim Audio's newest network players and streamers have been completely re-engineered based on a new streaming system. They revealed it has been in development for the past three years; Naim say that this release exceeds anything they've produced in the past. The flagship model is the ND 555, the newest launch of a 500 series in twelve years and the only streamer in the 500 range for £12,999. Also announced is the NDX 2 and the ND5 XS2, priced at £4,999 and £1,999 respectively. Combining ultra-modern DSP with a pure, analogue soul, their network players promise to deliver captivating, enveloping sound quality to breathe new life into your music collection.

"Inside the ND5 XS 2, NDX 2 and ND 555 are a precise blend of high-speed digital componentry and rich analogue audio stages. Each system is easy to control and built with the latest streaming services in mind. Our ND 555 and NDX 2 models also feature full colour displays to bring songs to life. When it came to our reference player, ND 555, Naim engineers called on audio technology we’ve only used in our flagship Statement range, as well as several new innovations. For example, we installed a series of 13 discrete regulators in ND 555 – similar to Statement, they supply ultra-clean voltage to delicate audio stages. It’s this mix of high-end, audiophile technology and the playability of our streaming system that gives  our new network players a staggering musical output."

Naim have also revealed the features for each of these streamers, including sharing some of the product specific updates. The whole range will be updated to include faster bit-rate audio, online software updates and a colour display panel for the NDX 2 and ND 555. They all come with an extendable Wi-Fi aerial for better coverage and connectivity of the new 2.4 & 5 GHz high-speed Wi-Fi as well as the existing Bluetooth aerial. Naim also announced embedded streaming capabilities through Tidal, Spotify and Chromecast, compatibility with DSD and Roon, and 32bit UPnP 32 bit files. The main boards are all isolated entirely from the casing with springs specially tuned to decouple all vibration above 10Hz as a way to reduce the mechanical vibration reaching it for clearer sound reproduction across the range. Naim have also prioritised the power supply arrangement, as they have done in the past. The ND 555 has 13 DR voltage regulators created by Naim themselves, which push power into the DACs, clocks and output stages using stable, clear power.

Below is a close up of the inner workings of the ND555.

The NDX 2 features an upgraded PCM192A DAC with a discrete 12v converter, the same one present in the NAC-N 272 pre-amplifier, which is a favourite of ours in the store. It is upgradable with the XPS and 555 PS power supply, and utilises LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signalling) for lower noise and jitter and faster speed, meaning better and clearer sound overall.

The ND5 XS2 also uses LVDS, and is controlled through Naim's exclusive remote application, however there is a front panel status LED display.

Naim's ND 555 includes a TFT 5" display screen with a proximity sensor (not dissimilar to uniti range), discrete regulators and runs solely through the 555 PS only with no internal transformers.

We are incredibly excited to have these units released so we can get them in for testing and fully assess them in our demonstration room. We will be offering a trade-in service for all older Naim equipment should you wish to upgrade; please contact us for more details.

More information will be coming soon; we will update this page when another announcement is made with the developments. It is predicted they should be commerically available by Summer 2018.

March 2018 Statement

Naim has officially confirmed the below products, which we should expect to see shortly after the discontinuation of the NDS.

"It has been an exciting month at Naim. We officially announced the launch of our brand new Network Players at the Sound & Vision Bristol Hi-Fi Show on 23rd February. The ND 555, NDX 2 and ND5 XS 2 will supersede our original line of streamers and feature a host of advanced features that will delight the eyes and ears."

Jan 2018 Statement

Today Naim announce the replacement to the popular ND5XS, NDX and NDS network streamers, in the form of the ND5 XS 2, NDX 2 and ND 555.

Information is still limited, as the products are in their final development phase. But I will update this page as and when more information becomes available.

We already have an upgrade program in place for our existing ND5XS, NDX and NDS customers - so please contact us if you are interested in per-ordering the new model. Naim have been manufacturing some of the best sounding streaming sources for some years now, and we are excited to test these and hear the improvements.

Here is the statement from Naim which I found on the forums today, very exciting news. I know a little more than is being revealed here, but I'm sworn to secrecy... Join us on the 26th of June for our Naim streaming event. Details coming soon.

"The ND 555 (pictured) is a real product and will be launched and delivered this year. We (Naim Audio) will show it at Sound and Vision – The Bristol Show this month, but at present we have no plans to demonstrate it. The team are still working very hard to prepare the product for our intended plans, but events are as they are, so the very least we can do is confirm the existence of the product at this time for all interested parties. Experience from recent events has made us consider how and when we release and launch products. As such, we will only publicly demo the ND 555 when we are confident that we have extracted every last drop of the emotional connection to music I know you and I expect from a Naim 500 Series product."

I will update this page as I am allowed, but if you are interested in this product contact us to register your interest. We will be offering a generous trade in on your existing Naim streamer, finance options as well home demonstration. We are Edinburgh and Falkirk's exclusive Naim retailer with a full range of products on permanent demonstration.
