Franco-Serblin speakers descended on Joppa from Heaven.
A moving-coil battlefront. Dynavector Karat 17DX vs. Hana ML.
Dynavector Karat DX17 vs Hana ML.
Oh my Lord, two little black boxes with little Hi-Fi gems within. I was at Hi-Fi Corner and these two tantalizing mites were sitting on the table before me. I recognized the boxes as containing similarly priced moving-coil cartridges, both I think it's fair to say, belonging on the first couple of rungs of the “high-end” ladder. I knew the two models as I had been contemplating buying another cartridge myself and had researched a few possibilities. I couldn't in all honesty justify this other than just fancying having another cartridge to hand, and in any event, can one ever have too many of them? Anyway, it's cheaper than collecting cars! Struan, MD of Hi-Fi Corner, saw my eyes drawn to the boxes and suggested I take them home and compare the two, maybe anticipating a sale. How could I say no?

Welcome Franco Serblin
Arriving shortly at Hi-Fi Corner, the beautiful range of Franco Serblin speakers. The pedigree is impeccable. Franco Serblin was the designer of the acclaimed Sonus Faber loudspeakers before branching out to produce this stunning line-up. With a similar philosophy to his previous creations, the design of these speakers is aligned to that of musical instruments, with great emphasis on materials and craftsmanship beyond compare. Coupled to this is the sheer elegance of the innovative designs and, common to the entire line-up, the ability to produce concert hall dynamics from a relatively modest sized enclosure.
Four designs are available. Two are 2-way designs – the Lignea and

Audio Research Ref 6SE pre-amplifier review
Why are white, large, sealed boxes with Audio Research Corp. printed on the side irresistible audiophile nectar? It's sad really but I was uncontrollably drawn to such an item sitting on the carpet of huge Hi-Fi Corner store in Joppa. A closer look revealed the label on said box. “Reference 6SE pre-amplifier” ….now that's not ordinary nectar. When MD Struan said I could take it home until they needed it for demonstration in their main listening room, it was a forgone conclusion that it was facing a short journey. The box would just fit in my MX-5 on the passenger seat with the roof down, but the gear stick couldn't be moved if I needed to drive with the passenger door shut. This was a slight drawback until the kindly MD said he would bring it over to my flat. Was this just another example of “working from home?” Not really as it was pure indulgence, but what the heck. Have a read as to how I got on...
